5 reasons why your air conditioner won't work when you need it

Imagine coming home after a long and tiring day in sweltering heat, and instantly you turn on the air conditioner, which irritate you further by blowing hot air. The situation becomes worse when you fail to understand the reasons behind the poor performance of your AC.

The best way is to figure out the possible causes so you may have an idea what to tell your AC repair guy:

The air filter might be dirty

One thing you can check yourself is the condition of the air filter. All the dust and pet hair can clog your air filter. So if your air filter is dirty, it will reduce the airflow through the unit. It is recommended that you clean or replaces your air filter once a month. But if you have pets in your home then you need to be extra careful and do it more frequently.

Refrigerant can be low or leaking:

The role of refrigerant is to cool the air that is coming out of your AC. If your air conditioner has low levels of refrigerant, this could mean two things; either there is a leak or your system is undercharged. It is important to mention here that refrigerant is harmful to the environment and do not handle it yourself. Rather call the AC repair guy and tell him to check it.

Outside fan is broken:

The outside fan is responsible for pulling out the heat from your room to the outside. So if it is not working right, the heat transfer cannot happen properly. As a result, the AC compressor will overheat and might even trip the safety overload. More severely, it can cause internal damage to the compressor.

Frozen Coil:

The frozen coil can be caused by many reasons. A dirty air filter can be one reason. Secondly, a low refrigerant can also cause a frozen coil. Frost can build up around or on the coil so do check it.

The thermostat can be faulty:

An old or faulty thermostat can cause problems for your air conditioner. Your AC can cycle on and off more frequently or just stop working completely if your thermostat is not working properly. You should ideally upgrade your thermostat to a digital one.

Get your Appointment:

Lastly, do not forget to get your AC serviced by a professional at least once a year. This can help you to get to know beforehand any faults with your unit; leaking or low refrigerant and other problems can be identified.
